James Sampson: Modest soul singer

James Sampson has lived in Denmark since 1999 and he has achieved a great deal in that short time. He has won a popular TV show, “Star for a Night” on DR1 and has also released three albums. With his fourth album, “The Best of Me – Past and Present”, James Sampson presents a collector's CD with two brand new numbers.

The James Sampson who performes on the new album is more fit than ever. Since the last album he has lost no less than 33 kilos, which according to him were 33 totally excess kilos.

I feel incredibly privileged that I can already make a collection of my favourite numbers from the three earlier albums, all of which I have been crazy about. It is wonderful to gather all the numbers that I love to sing on one album and at the same time, look forward to two new and fantastic numbers.

So says the cheerful James Sampson who also participated in the Danish Song Contest 2007. He participated with the song “Say You Love Me”, which is also one of the two new numbers on the album. This was the first time he participated in the song contest.

In the long-term I would like to do something other than Motown, but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Right now, it’s about “The Best of Me – Past and Present”, which I am very excited to perform. I love Motown, but it’s also good to have dreams for the future.

“The Best of Me – Past and Present” was released on 16 March 2007.

If anyone should believe that James Sampson just appeared out of nowhere when he won on TV, they need to think again. Actually, a career in music has been in the cards for a long time and when his TV breakthrough occurred, he was actually about to form a band.
James was born and raised near Los Angeles, USA in an incredibly musical family where already as a baby he was surrounded by music morning, noon and night.

James Sampson moved to Denmark in 1999 and he did so for one reason only: his wife Evy who is Danish through and through and comes from Albertslund. The couple met five years before in a bar in California where James was a waiter – and it was certainly the proverbial “love at first sight”.
At that time, Evy worked as an au-pair in the USA. Four months later, they moved in together. A year later, they were married. And after five years in the USA, they moved to Denmark.
In Denmark, life developed perfectly for James Sampson, who with his modest nature has become popular everywhere.

His Danish father-in-law coaxed Sampson into singing Elvis Presley’s “Impossible Dreams” as a tribute from his father-in-law to his mother-in-law during his father-in-law’s 60th birthday celebration. James was persuaded and during the party, his father-in-law video recorded James’ performance. And it was also his father-in-law who put pressure on the shy and modest James who finally agreed to have the tape sent in to the Danish National Broadcasting Corporation.

Sampson can be booked, with his band, for closed company events, church concerts and other cultural events.
